102   FURKA in:dépendance [The Accumulation of Hope, Failure and Ecstasy]

00's PhillipsPflugfelder could be seen–dressed in neon green–at times in ecstatic and hopeful fashion, at times if not failing then struggling with the conceptual might they were hoping to achieve and the literal weight of the sound system they were carrying for nearly 4 weeks

Furk’art Prize nominee–2000, 2022

Medium: Sound performance [mono]

Along side Laurence Weiner, Panamarenko, Marina Abramovic/Ulay, Stanley Brouwn, Per Kirkeby, Kim Jones, Roman Signer, John Armleder, Luc Deleu, Terry Fox, James Lee Byars, Christoph Rütimann, Remy Zaugg, Ian Anüll, Jenny Holzer, Res Ingold and Max Bill, 00Island decamped to the legendary residency at the Furka Pass for 4 weeks to accumulate Hope, Failure and Ecstasy in the form of a twentyfour/7 sound performance encompassing the most central 1-kilometre radius around the Furkablick [2490m] and all artworks within it. Without the permission of collector–of–nature's–sounds, Ariel Kalma, 00's PhillipsPflugfelder set out to play to the Furka mountains an intricately remixed version of the psychedelic Kalma back-catalogue–not only returning to nature what had been extracted–but to tackle the sublimity of the high alpine pass and the failure of all art in the face of it since the Furk'art project began with the performance A Drop of Black Perfume by the artist James Lee Byars in 1983. In opposition to Byars slogan, "The smell evaporates, but the delicate gesture sanctifies the rough place", 00Island's total sonic occupation of the territory and the art within it, through a constant ecstatic wall of sound, hoped to–but ultimately failed to–rival the all–encompassing Furka fog that serially renders the territory, the accumulated Furk'art and the mountains invisible–a true Null Island. The total failure of art as a total work of art [Gesamtkunstwerk] is indeed The Accumulation of Hope, Failure and Ecstasy. Thanks to Ariel Kalma, Furkateam, Jan DeVylder and the generous DeVylder family, and our friend Janis. Special thanks to Laurence Weiner, Panamarenko, Marina Abramovic/Ulay, Stanley Brouwn, Per Kirkeby, Kim Jones, Roman Signer, John Armleder, Luc Deleu, Terry Fox, James Lee Byars, Christoph Rütimann, Remy Zaugg, Ian Anüll, Jenny Holzer, Res Ingold and Max Bill. [Furk’art Prize nominee– 2000.]
